No matter how new your home, you are likely to find yourself needing or wanting to make some minor repairs or updates eventually. Whether you excel at home improvement or have never even held a hammer, here is a list of the most essential tools for any homeowner:
Hammer – Can be used for anything that needs a good whack. Make sure it is comfortable to hold and has the handy curved claw for removing pesky unwanted nails.
Multipurpose Screwdriver – Also known as a six-in-one, this handy tool includes interchangeable sizes of Phillips and flat head as well as 3/8 and1/4 nut drivers. This is almost as good as having whole box full of screwdrivers.
Utility Knife – This easy to maneuver, razor sharp tool with replaceable blades will make straight, sharp cuts in anything from cardboard to drywall.
Pliers, Pliers and Pliers – Three types of pliers are recommended as must haves. First, needle or long nose pliers for holding nails while hammering or doing electrical work. Second, adjusting pliers that can hold on to almost anything and will help you manipulate, bend and unscrew. Third, locking pliers or vice grips that can act as a mini vice clamp and can even crimp hoses.
Drill – Sure, you could hammer it in or use some elbow grease to screw it in…but why would you want to, when with one push of a button, it’s done! Drills are great for drilling holes to secure large hanging items. A drill just makes every job faster!
Nails and Screws – Now that you have the tools, you need nails and screws. A well-stocked toolbox should have finishing nails, drywall screws, regular washers and nuts, and expanding sleeves.
Safety – When using tools, it is best to take precautions to avoid injury. Protect your eyes from metal and wood shavings as well as toxic solvents with a pair of goggles. Wear ear protectors when using loud machinery. Wear a dust mask for dirty jobs or working with insulation. You will also need leather and rubber gloves to protect your hands.
One more whack – If you have all of the above and would like to be more prepared for what ever may come your way, buy a flashlight, tape measure, torpedo level, painter’s tool, painters tape, paintbrushes, a large sponge, sand paper and a bucket. With all of this, you are well on your way to being a DIY’er. |
